Global PC shipments will decline by 4.3% in Q1 2022 while Mac increases

According to the latest data from Counterpoint Research, global PC shipments in the first quarter of 2022 fell by 4.3% year-on-year to 78.7 million units. In the first quarter of 2022, Lenovo maintained its leading position in the global PC market with a 23.1% share, a slight decline compared to 2021. The brand’s total shipments were 18.2 million units, down 9.5% year-on-year. Lenovo has performed well during the COVID-19 pandemic, mainly because of its internal manufacturing and operational controls. This advantage will continue to help the company when demand is uncertain or parts supply issues.

HP took second place with a 20.2 per cent share of the total global PC shipments. The company’s shipments fell 16% year over year, mainly due to the loss of Chromebook sales momentum and weak consumer demand.

Dell ranks third with a slight increase in shipments in the first quarter of 2022, helped by the commercial/premium product strategy.

Apple continues its success with the M1 MacBook lineup, delivering 8% year-over-year shipment growth in the first quarter of 2022.

Asus’ shipments rose 4% year over year due to the expansion of its gaming and commercial products.

Acer continued to struggle as Chromebook sales lost momentum, ending the quarter with a 1% decline in shipments. Asus and Acer both had a 7% market share in the quarter.

According to Counterpoint Research, four factors played a role in the overall decline in the PC market. The factors are

• Global inflation is reducing the spending power of consumers and businesses.
• The war between Russia and Ukraine has brought great uncertainty and worry to the future of society, politics and the economy.
• Ongoing parts shortages and logistical challenges.
• China’s coronavirus lockdown further reduces supply.

50% of Mac buyers in Q2 of fiscal 2022 are new users

Since the launch of the first Apple Silicon Mac in November 2020, Apple’s Mac sales have continued to grow strongly. Apple’s Mac revenue hit $10.4 billion in the second quarter of fiscal 2022, up from $9.1 billion a year earlier. On an earnings call today covering the second quarter of fiscal 2022, Apple CFO, Luca Maestri said the company has been expanding its installed base. Mac upgrades set a quarterly record in March, with half of all Mac buyers in the quarter being new to the product.

Apple’s Macs grew strongly despite supply chain constraints. Apple has struggled to deliver some high-end MacBook Pro models on time, with some users seeing significant delays in shipping estimates. Recently, Apple introduced the Mac Studio with the M1 Max and M1 Ultra chips. The M1 Ultra is Apple’s most powerful Apple Silicon chip to date and is made up of two M1 Max pieces combined.
