Chiefs had a quiet January transfer window, not making a single signing despite being linked to a number players.

Chiefs linked with a few targets in January

The most prominent of those names linked to Chiefs were those of Amazulu midfielder Siyethemba Sithebe, Royal AM striker Victor Letsoalo and Marumo Gallants winger Katlego Otladisa. Chiefs were also believed to be firmly in the running for Sipho Mbule and Teboho Mokoena, but deals for any of that duo were always going to be difficult for the side.

Ultimately, Chiefs watched on as their big rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, arguably the one club that didn’t need reinforcements- go on to sign players worth up to a reported R30 million. The biggest out of that spending spree being the signing of Mokoena, who Amakhosi fans were desperate to see in a gold and black jersey. What would’ve undoubtedly rubbed salt into the wounds of their supporters, is the fact that the club confirmed that they did go as far as holding talks over Mokoena’s signing.

Baxter gives insight on club transfer process

Now after that January window failure, where Chiefs fans continued to ask about the competence of their club in the market, Baxter has given an insight on how they operate in their recruitment.

“We will compete with them, but when they have spent over R40-million in this (January) window, then I don’t think we can go into a direct fight with them if it’s a question of who is going to put the most cash out, I am sure Sundowns have an advantage over most teams, not just Chiefs. What I said is that we won’t add players to the squad unless it is value for money, unless we think that we are paying the chairman’s hard earned money and we are getting a player who will strengthen the squad.”  Baxter said.

Baxter then went on to admit that Chiefs cannot compete financially for players with Sundowns, but did he take a swipe at the Brazilians too?

Does he take a swipe at Sundowns?

“In many cases, we cannot compete with Sundowns if they go for the same player because they will throw more money at him. We want to compete with them but we are aware of their huge financial advantage,” Baxter concluded on the issue.

Even though Sundowns have the undoubted financial advantage, Chiefs have also been able to reportedly beat the Tshwane-based outfit to the likes of Njabulo Ngcobo and Siyethemba Sithebe of late. That will give their faithful that they can do so with other players too, like Mbule who is thought to prefer a move to Chiefs rather than Sundowns.
