‘I pride myself in being rural’

On Thursday 10 February, excited Real Housewives of Durban fans were excited to watch MaKhumalo – Musa Mseleku’s wife – make her debut on the show. The Uthando Nes’thembu star, however, left many people feeling disappointed with her lack of luxury and grandeur – something the other housewives are famous for.

She has since responded to the backlash and according to her, wants people to see the real her – a rural woman who is able to adapt to suburban society.

MaKhumalo is rural and proud!

Finally, we got to see Thobile MaKhumalo doing her thing on RHOD after it was announced that she and influencer/rapper Londie London would be joining the cast.

Unfortunately, for many people, MaKhumalo did not fit in with her co-stars who live in huge lavishly decorated homes.

Many people headed online to slam her rural home and her car – one person even going as far as saying that they weren’t interested in seeing “yellow houses” on the show.

MaKhumalo, who recently spoke to Drum Magazine – says that she is not swayed by the naysayers and is proud to be showing off her rural roots.

“If you know MaKhumalo then you’d know that she is someone from the rural areas. So, it was going to be misleading to find MaKhumalo, watching her for the first time on a new show, now you find her at a new house and not in Umzumbe.

“Secondly, it is one thing that I pride myself with to be someone who comes from ‘deep rural’ but made it to the urban areas and was able to mingle with people who are assumed to be from very high standards,” she added.

‘Spicing things up’

She also went on to say that the show’s producers wanted to show how she could be both a rural woman and someone who can mingle with the upper-class society.

“There were never interested in the properties that I might be owning in the urban areas because they wanted to spice things up,” she said.

The 32-year-old also touched on whether her husband would be joining her own the show frequently – something that also bothered her fans.

According to her, he will feature in a few episodes but has encouraged her to be her own person and do her thing on the reality TV show.
