Diogo Jota scores 100th goal as Liverpool romp past Leicester City

Diogo Jota scored twice as Liverpool clinically claimed three points from their English Premier League clash with Leicester City.

Jota reacted sharply to lash in a rebound after a fizzing header from Van Dijk was parried into his path.

The strike was Jota’s 100th in his club career. He would add to it later in the night as he claimed a brace.

Jurgen Klopp’s men cut Manchester City’s advantage at the top of the table to nine points. However despite Liverpool having a game in hand to come on the English champions, the coach isn’t convinced Pep Guardiola is under pressure.

“I don’t think they smell our breath already,” said Klopp after the match. “But we just try to win football matches.”

With Mohamed Salah left on the bench after his exertions at AFCON and Sadio Mane still celebrating his success with Senegal, Jota took centre stage.

“He’s obviously in a really good goalscoring moment, which is incredibly helpful in the absence of Sadio and Mo,” Klopp said of Jota. 

“We have no idea where his limit is.”

Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers returned to Anfield under pressure to turn around Leicester’s floundering season after an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to second-tier side Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Rodgers left out a handful of first team regulars to send a message. However, he was happy with the effort his side showed.

“Tonight was not just about the result, it was about restoring pride,” said Rodgers. 

“We took a top team right to the very end. I was much happier with that performance tonight and the spirit of the team.”

Liverpool also handed an outing to new signing Luis Diaz who came close to scoring with a well-struck effort.
